The museum is housed in the former home of a 19thC woollen manufacturer, set in pleasant parkland. The museum's varied collections include fine and decorative arts, natural history, local and social history and costume. As well as Rossendale's history, there are displays on the house and family, a recreation of a Victorian drawing-room and a natural history gallery, featuring the historic tiger and python exhibit and a baby African elephant of Victorian antiquity.
